Close Reading & Literary Analysis — Problem set, Grade 12

Use the grade’s short story to explain how a change in a character or narrator develops a larger idea. Analyze two details from different parts and one craft choice.

Review the key ideas

Analyzing Complex Literature

Before interpreting, establish who is speaking, what is happening, and what a sentence literally says. Mark an uncertainty rather than guess past it.

Literary Movements & Context

A literary movement is a historical grouping of related practices and concerns, not a label that explains every text from an era. Authors can combine or resist conventions.

Theme, Symbol & Motif

A theme is a supported interpretation of what a text suggests about a topic. Symbols and recurring patterns can develop it; several readings may be defensible.

Critical Perspectives

A critical perspective is a set of questions used to interpret a text. Formal analysis focuses on craft; a historical lens examines context; social perspectives examine power, access, or representation.

Problem 1

Make one observation and one supported inference. Explain the evidence or language choice.
Answer and explanation

The text explicitly says she refuses water and conceals the bag’s contents. Those actions suggest embarrassment about the lost key, but they do not prove she dislikes the neighbor.

Use the criteria to compare your reasoning, not to copy the model’s wording. A supported alternative interpretation may earn full credit.

Response criteria

  • Make an accurate, focused claim or revision.
  • Use a relevant detail or a clearly explained language choice.
  • Explain the relationship and recognize a relevant limit.

Problem 2

Explain a possible movement connection without certainty. Explain the evidence or language choice.
Answer and explanation

The personified natural force and individual reflection resemble Romantic concerns. That resemblance alone cannot establish its date, influence, or membership in a movement; those claims require contextual evidence.

Problem 3

Develop a theme and explain the trophy’s changing meaning. Explain the evidence or language choice.
Answer and explanation

The story suggests that worth can come from use and connection rather than winning. The hidden trophy first represents failed status; its visible use for a shared activity suggests a different measure of value.

Problem 4

Compare a craft lens and a power lens. Explain the evidence or language choice.
Answer and explanation

A craft lens tracks the naming contrast and its reversal. A power lens asks who receives public identity and agency. The two can reinforce each other, but neither establishes the museum’s motives without more evidence.
