Chapter 7 · Language, Style & Conventions

Assigned readings

This week connects focused skill instruction with a sustained reading or writing assignment. Keep evidence notes, drafts, feedback, and corrections in the portfolio.

This week’s goals

Read Books XXIII–XXIV; complete the epic. Finish Chapter 7 workshop, review, and quiz.

Five sessions of about 40–50 minutes, plus 20–30 minutes of sustained reading most days. Spread long passages across reading time; shorten or extend the schedule according to comprehension. Exam sessions may be combined as specified in the paper.

Session 1 · Recognition and settlement

A practical method: read once for literal understanding, mark a relevant detail, write a tentative response, then test it against another detail. In a language task, identify the intended meaning before changing the sentence. In a research task, record what each source actually establishes before synthesizing. For Grade 9, the application expectation is: Trace a change across a passage and consider one competing explanation. Plan a response of about 180–250 words when a task calls for a developed paragraph; a sentence-editing task may need much less. These lengths guide planning rather than replace the success criteria.

Your task

Compare personal recognition with the wider ending. What remains beyond a private reunion?

  1. Prepare (5 minutes): retrieve the relevant method and state one question.
  2. Study (10–15 minutes): read or reread the named passage and annotate relevant details.
  3. Apply (15–20 minutes): complete the task independently, using accurate source references.
  4. Reflect (5 minutes): explain a choice, check the criteria, and record a next step.
Hint and response guidance

Begin with a short, precisely located detail or sentence. Explain its relevance before extending the conclusion.

Shared knowledge helps recognition, but wider conflict requires more than the household’s reunion. Explain a detail from each level of the ending.

  • Accurately complete the assigned task.
  • Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
  • Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.

Session 2 · Context vocabulary

Read the named section before making an inference. State the task in your own words and locate the evidence it requires.

Your task

Select six unfamiliar words. Record context, inference, verification, and a new sentence.

An inference should fit grammatical role and paragraph meaning. Check uncertain or multiple meanings rather than relying only on a guessed root.

  • Accurately complete the assigned task.
  • Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
  • Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.

Session 3 · Conventions audit

Explain how a detail supports the claim; separate what the text states from your interpretation and what remains uncertain.

Your task

Check twelve editing-log entries and demonstrate four different categories in a new paragraph.

The log should include boundaries, agreement or reference, punctuation or parallelism, and diction or style. Explain each choice in context.

  • Accurately complete the assigned task.
  • Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
  • Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.

Session 4 · Epic comparison

Draft for purpose and audience first. Use the linked unit to review the method, then apply it to this week’s text rather than copying a model.

Your task

Draft 700–900 words comparing homecoming or learning in the Odyssey and The Time Machine.

Use evidence across both works and a meaningful difference: cultural and divine relationships differ from a framed speculative account. Avoid a universal hero formula.

  • Accurately complete the assigned task.
  • Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
  • Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.

Session 5 · Assessment and submission

Use feedback to test meaning, evidence, and scope. Revise substantive issues before editing conventions; preserve the earlier version.

Your task

Revise the comparison, submit the editing commentary, and complete Chapter 7 review and quiz.

Check evidence, development, and conventions separately. A correct sentence task does not substitute for reading the entire epic.

  • Accurately complete the assigned task.
  • Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
  • Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.
