4 questions in the course bank use Like terms, in Representing Other Algebraic Relationships, Multi-Step Equations, Polynomial Operations.

Problem 1

Simplify 4(x + 2) + 3(x - 5).

Worked answer

7x-7

4x + 8 and 3x - 15

4x + 3x = 7x

8 - 15 = -7

7x - 7

Problem 2

Solve 5x + 2x - 6 = 22.

Worked answer

4

7x - 6 = 22

7x = 28

x = 4

Problem 3

Simplify (3x + 5) + (2x - 8).

Worked answer

5x - 3

3x + 2x = 5x

5 - 8 = -3

Problem 4

Simplify (x2 + 4x) + (3x2 - x).

Worked answer

4x^2 + 3x

x2 + 3x2 = 4x2

4x - x = 3x
