Chapter 2 · Cells, Membranes & Exchange
- Unit 2.1 · Cell Theory & the Discovery of Cells
- Unit 2.2 · Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic Cells & Their Organelles
Assigned readings
Follow the chapter question: How do cell boundaries and internal structures support life?
This week’s goals
- Explain the figures, mechanisms and quantities before calculation.
- Distinguish source observations, illustrative records and hypotheses.
- Apply independently and revise from evidence.
Read A boundary that exchanges, signals and remains organized at this chapter’s launch, then use its linked unit explanations and source records in the assigned sessions.
Five flexible sessions, normally about 50–60 minutes. Unit study uses three sessions. The sample keeps a complete 90-minute extended sitting paired with about 30 minutes of correction; extend teaching when needed.
Session 1 · Cell Theory & the Discovery of Cells — observe and build
Illustrative evidence case. A tissue image has repeated regions, but scale, resolution and preparation affect visible details.
Your task
Read the chapter background and unit language. Make a first model, study the core explanation and Parts 1–2, then attempt their visual questions and checks.
- Prepare the assigned reading and identify the question.
- Trace the figures and retain a labeled first model or prior attempt.
- Complete the stated task before opening guidance.
- Compare reasoning with criteria, explain a correction and retain the revised evidence.
Hint and response guidance
Name the structures, quantities, system boundary and assumptions before selecting a mechanism.
No. Prokaryotic cells lack a membrane-bounded nucleus, and some specialized eukaryotic cells also lack one at maturity; a nucleus is not a universal requirement for being a cell. No. Its displayed length and scale bar double together, preserving the ratio and the 30 μm estimate.
- Use the stated evidence and correct units.
- Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
- Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
- State a limitation and a useful revision/test.
Session 2 · Cell Theory & the Discovery of Cells — connect and apply
Magnification is enlargement of an image. Resolution is the ability to distinguish nearby features as separate under the imaging conditions. A larger blurry spot can still hide two structures. Contrast, preparation, staining and artifacts also influence what can be seen. Light and electron imaging have different capacities and preparation requirements; neither one automatically shows every structure alive and unchanged. Before identifying an organelle, ask whether the feature is resolved, labeled with scale and supported by appropriate observations rather than a familiar-looking blob.
Your task
Study Parts 3–4 and any named source records. Attempt the whole-unit application with labeled mechanisms, correct quantities and a limitation.
The original image may lack sufficient resolution; resizing cannot recover detail that was never resolved. Use an appropriate method or independent evidence. They differ in cellular organization and dependence on host machinery; size alone is not a classification rule.
- Use the stated evidence and correct units.
- Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
- Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
- State a limitation and a useful revision/test.
Session 3 · Cell Theory & the Discovery of Cells — explain and transfer
Use the worked case and a changed condition to test independent understanding.
Your task
Study the illustrated worked case, attempt varied practice and the changed independent case, then revise the opening model and complete the exit check.
The estimate is 2.4×25 = 60 μm. A magnification label describes a particular display enlargement; resizing changes it, while an image and scale bar resized together preserve the specimen-length ratio.
- Use the stated evidence and correct units.
- Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
- Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
- State a limitation and a useful revision/test.
Session 4 · Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic Cells & Their Organelles — observe and build
Illustrative evidence case. A selected protein must be synthesized, sorted and transported without confusing information with cargo.
No. Its genetic material is present without a membrane-bounded nucleus; nuclear organization and the existence of genes are different questions. Its functions and metabolic demands differ, affecting organelle production and turnover; shared organismal DNA does not impose an identical organelle census.
- Use the stated evidence and correct units.
- Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
- Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
- State a limitation and a useful revision/test.
Session 5 · Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic Cells & Their Organelles — connect and apply
The endoplasmic reticulum, ER, is a membrane network; ribosomes attached to rough ER can make proteins entering the secretory pathway. The Golgi apparatus modifies and sorts selected products. A vesicle is a membrane-bounded transport compartment, and exocytosis releases contents when its membrane fuses with the plasma membrane. The nucleus supplies transcribed information rather than shipping a finished protein through the whole route. Not all proteins follow this pathway; cytosolic proteins and organelle-targeted proteins have other destinations and targeting mechanisms.
Your task
Study Parts 3–4 and any named source records. Attempt the whole-unit application with labeled mechanisms, correct quantities and a limitation.
No. It handles selected cargo; many proteins remain in other compartments and use different targeting routes. Other explanations or later changes may affect membranes; genetic relationships and other independent cellular evidence strengthen the historical inference.
- Use the stated evidence and correct units.
- Explain a biological mechanism or relationship.
- Show intermediate reasoning with a labeled figure or calculation.
- State a limitation and a useful revision/test.

Parent / teacher weekly conference
Discuss an actual attempt before opening guidance. Use written-response criteria and notebook evidence to choose support. These home-study sessions do not certify mandated investigations or school laboratory eligibility.
- Can the learner trace a figure and explain every relevant label?
- Are variables, units and stated assumptions correct?
- Can a changed case be solved without copying a worked answer?
