Cellular respiration — Science definition
Defined in 2 courses:
- The release of energy from glucose using oxygen, in mitochondria, giving out carbon dioxide and water; it runs in plant cells as well as animal cells. (Life Science & Scientific Inquiry)
- The process organisms use to break down sugar with oxygen to release energy, giving off carbon dioxide and water. (Life Science: Biology)
Where it is taught
- Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration — Cells, Transport & Cellular Energy, Life Science & Scientific Inquiry, Grade 7
- Biogeochemical Cycles — Ecosystems & Conservation Decisions, Life Science: Biology, Grade 10
In use
Releasing that stored energy again is cellular respiration, and it runs the reaction in reverse.
Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration
Cellular respiration runs the reaction backward — organisms break those sugars down for energy and exhale carbon dioxide straight back into the air.
