Spring tide & neap tide — Science definition

Spring tides have a larger typical tidal range near new/full phases when lunar and solar tidal axes align; neap tides have a smaller range near quarter phases when those axes are roughly perpendicular. Local coast/basin dynamics modify the actual tides.
