Primary source — Social Studies definition
Defined in 3 courses:
- Direct evidence relevant to a historical question, including an object, text, image or later testimony about experience. Use depends on the question, access and context, not creation date alone. (Ancient Civilizations)
- Evidence created in the period or activity being investigated; its form does not automatically guarantee accuracy. (U.S. & New York History: Indigenous Nations to Reconstruction)
- Evidence created in the period or activity under investigation; its usefulness and accuracy still require evaluation. (U.S. History: Reconstruction to the Early 21st Century)

Primary vs Secondary Sources
Questions using primary source
Problem 1
Does calling a letter a primary source prove its statements?
Answer and explanation
No. Its date and connection to the event make it relevant evidence, but its claims still need contextual reading and comparison with other information.
Problem 2
Is a primary source automatically accurate?
Answer and explanation
No. It may contain errors, omissions, persuasion, or a limited viewpoint. Its usefulness depends on the question and corroboration, not simply its age.
