Research, Media, Discussion & Presentation — Chapter review · English 6, Grade 6

Investigate, evaluate, discuss and communicate with evidence.

Review the key ideas

Research Questions, Notes & Source Credit

Research is a planned inquiry, not a collection of copied facts. Turn a broad topic into an answerable question with a defined place, process or comparison. “Water” is a topic; “How can a paved surface change runoff during a storm?” gives a mechanism to investigate.

Media, Charts & Missing Information

Media include written, spoken, visual and digital ways of presenting information. Read a headline, image, caption and chart together, then ask who created the message and for what purpose. A professional-looking design is not evidence that its claims are accurate.

Discussion, Listening & Evidence

An evidence-based discussion develops ideas through preparation, listening and response. It is not won by speaking longest. Read the shared selection, prepare a claim and two details, and mark one question you genuinely need others to help answer.

Presentation, Visual Support & Response

A presentation organizes an explanation for an audience and purpose. Choose one clear claim or inquiry question, define the terms the listener needs and sequence evidence so the listener can follow the reasoning. More slides do not automatically provide a clearer explanation.

Problem 1

Repair the source-use error.
Answer and explanation

Describe it as a hypothetical model and preserve its role in explaining pathways. Actual school measurements require a dated local method and record.

Describe it as a hypothetical model and preserve its role in explaining pathways. Actual school measurements require a dated local method and record.

Response criteria

  • Answer the actual question with accurate details.
  • Explain how the evidence or language choice supports the conclusion.
  • State a relevant limit, alternative or justified revision.

Problem 2

Compare the reasoning in the two cases. What method transfers, and which source detail must be checked again?
Answer and explanation

In the first case, Describe it as a hypothetical model and preserve its role in explaining pathways. Actual school measurements require a dated local method and record. In the changed case, The trial source can support a claim about its stated users, while the official article can define a water-system term. Institutional authority on one subject does not verify an unrelated local result. Record source title and location for each claim. The method of defining the relationship and testing relevant evidence transfers; the particular source detail and scope must be checked anew.

Problem 3

Rewrite the headline accurately.
Answer and explanation

“Most responding book-club members favor a reading corner.” State 18/20, the group and the missing wider-school evidence.

Problem 4

Compare the reasoning in the two cases. What method transfers, and which source detail must be checked again?
Answer and explanation

In the first case, “Most responding book-club members favor a reading corner.” State 18/20, the group and the missing wider-school evidence. In the changed case, The truncated axis enlarges the visual difference. That does not make the stated values false, but the display should make the baseline and counts conspicuous. A zero-based comparison or a clear break can help the audience assess magnitude. The method of defining the relationship and testing relevant evidence transfers; the particular source detail and scope must be checked anew.

Problem 5

Ask a fair clarifying question and explain its purpose.
Answer and explanation

“Which part did you personally hear, and when did you arrive or leave?” checks access without accusing either speaker of lying.

Problem 6

Compare the reasoning in the two cases. What method transfers, and which source detail must be checked again?
Answer and explanation

In the first case, “Which part did you personally hear, and when did you arrive or leave?” checks access without accusing either speaker of lying. In the changed case, Ask which vote each person personally heard. Different access could explain the apparent conflict without proving either lied. An answer should separate observation from reports received later. The method of defining the relationship and testing relevant evidence transfers; the particular source detail and scope must be checked anew.

Problem 7

Revise the visual’s claim and prepare a response to a question.
Answer and explanation

Label the two observed use counts and dates as fictional trial evidence. Explain that use was recorded but reading improvement was not measured.

Problem 8

Compare the reasoning in the two cases. What method transfers, and which source detail must be checked again?
Answer and explanation

In the first case, Label the two observed use counts and dates as fictional trial evidence. Explain that use was recorded but reading improvement was not measured. In the changed case, Say that the survey covers responding club members and does not establish every family’s position. Label both 18 and 20 with the group, describe the chart aloud and suggest a wider inquiry if family preference matters. The method of defining the relationship and testing relevant evidence transfers; the particular source detail and scope must be checked anew.
