Language, Style & Conventions — Chapter review · English 8: Trust, Community & Responsibility, Grade 8
Edit a passage from your own draft for meaning, sentence boundaries, agreement, punctuation, word choice, and citation. Submit original and revised versions with explanations of six purposeful changes.
Review the key ideas
Active & Passive Voice
Active voice places the grammatical subject as the actor; passive voice makes the subject the recipient of an action, often using a form of be plus a past participle.
Verb Moods
Verb mood concerns how a clause presents a statement, command, possibility, or hypothetical situation. It is different from a story’s atmosphere.
Punctuation: Comma, Dash & Ellipsis
Punctuation guides grouping, emphasis, and sentence boundaries. Explain what the mark does before changing it.
Vocabulary in Context
Use the surrounding sentence and paragraph to infer a word’s meaning, then check a reliable dictionary when needed. Grammatical role and word parts narrow possibilities but do not guarantee a meaning.
