Closed system — Science definition
Defined in 2 courses:
- A system where nothing (no gas, liquid, or solid) can enter or escape, so all mass stays inside to be measured. (Physical Science: Matter, Forces & Energy)
- A system that has not gained or lost relevant isotopes since the dated event. (Earth & Space Science)
Where it is taught
- Conservation of Mass — Chemistry, Physical Science: Matter, Forces & Energy, Grade 8
- Radiometric Dating & Half-Life — Earth’s History, Earth & Space Science, Grade 9
In use
A closed system exchanges no matter, but can exchange energy.
