Classical Civilizations & Belief Systems — Extension · Ancient Civilizations, Grade 6
Step into the classical worlds of Greece, Rome, India, and China, and meet the great belief systems — from Hinduism and Buddhism to Judaism, Christianity, and Confucianism — that still shape how billions of people live today.
Participation and Power
Your assignment
Compare Athenian citizenship, Roman republican expansion and Qin standardization using the classical reader. Explain why a positive institutional label cannot describe everyone’s experience.
Three separate 45–60 minute workshop sessions: evidence and planning; drafting and discussion; revision and explanation. Then take the chapter review and quiz in separate sessions.
Prepare
- Classical Worlds: Citizenship, Empire & Living Traditions
- Notebook, complete local readings and an earlier draft; no paid account or public posting required.
Plan, draft, revise
- Read the complete short selections named in the task and restate the assignment. Books remain on the parent-plan chapter schedule; use only assigned chapters until the ending has been read.
- Make notes naming the location, detail and what it could establish.
- Choose a focused claim and a possible alternative or limitation.
- Plan connected paragraphs; place evidence beside the point it supports.
- Draft without copying the model; ask a partner or parent to identify an unsupported step.
- Revise the claim or evidence after feedback, then edit conventions and source labels. Submit the draft, revision and a short explanation of the change.
Discuss your choices
- Which detail most strongly supports the claim, and why?
- What does a competing interpretation or source limit require you to qualify?
- What did revision change in meaning rather than only appearance?
Success criteria
- Answer the assignment with a focused and accurate claim.
- Use two or more located details from the complete assigned sources.
- Explain relationships rather than listing details.
- Address a relevant alternative, scope limit or counterclaim.
- Revise meaning, organization and source credit before final editing.
Evidence before drafting
Identify each source by title and a paragraph, chapter or distinctive phrase. Fictional analytical records are labeled teaching cases, not authentic historical documents.
For a 250–400 word Grade 6 response, plan an opening, two developed evidence sections and a short qualification. A concise editing commentary or presentation transcript can be shorter if it demonstrates every criterion.
Parent / teacher model and marking guidance
Athenian direct participation applied to a restricted citizen body. It did not include every resident, so the term democracy needs an explanation of membership. Excluded women, enslaved people and resident foreigners could be affected by decisions without sharing the same political role.
Rome illustrates a different distinction. Republican institutions at the center could coexist with conquest and rule over other peoples. Republic and empire are therefore not simple opposites in every use of the terms. A statement about central offices does not by itself describe conditions in a conquered territory.
Qin standardization could make communication and administration easier while extending state control and compulsory demands. Evaluating a policy requires asking which people gained a benefit or bore a cost. The comparison does not show all three societies were identical; it shows why matched questions about participation, authority and labor produce a more precise account than a single approving label.
- For each criterion, use 0 = absent or inaccurate,1 = partial with a specific repair needed,2 = clear and supported. Total 10, followed by a revision conference.
- Do not mark a model as the only permitted wording or interpretation. Ask for the actual evidence supporting the learner’s alternative.
- For a low score, teach the missing step, try a shorter new example and retain both attempts. Completion alone does not demonstrate understanding.
Accept a different interpretation when the learner supports it with relevant evidence. Discuss the draft before assigning a final mark.
Extend your reading and writing through the workshop reflection questions.
