Atlantic Slavery: Institutions, Resistance & Evidence — Practice · Grade 9 Social Studies
Chapter: Knowledge, Labor & the World Around 1750What this practice covers
By the end of Atlantic Slavery: Institutions, Resistance & Evidence you should be able to:
- I can explain demand and institutions.
- I can explain a historical connection using relevant evidence and qualify the conclusion.
6 questions, written answer, each with a worked explanation.
Vocabulary used: context, evidence, interpretation, chattel slavery, maroon community.
Problem 1
Answer and explanation
Explain the particular system’s legal status, inheritance, compulsion, and enforcement. Consumer demand is a contributing condition, not a substitute for identifying the people and institutions organizing violence and profit. Economic explanation does not excuse coercion.
Problem 2
Answer and explanation
Name the documented actor and transaction rather than saying Africa sold its people as though a continent made one decision. A participant’s involvement does not represent every community or remove responsibility from other organizers and buyers.
Problem 3
Answer and explanation
A numerical record cannot represent every captive’s identity, experience, or resistance. Check dates, missingness, definitions, and routes, then combine data with appropriate personal and institutional evidence. Do not turn suffering into a simulation or require learners to reenact captivity.
Problem 4
Answer and explanation
Agency does not mean captives had free choices or that resistance always succeeded. Name the action and constraint. A failure recorded by an authority can still document resistance, while unrecorded everyday actions may be difficult to reconstruct.
Problem 5
Answer and explanation
The recorded difference is 45 people, or 15 percent of departures. Without categories and complete records, it cannot be assigned wholly to one cause. Quantitative precision must not disguise uncertainty or erase the people behind the figures.
Subtract 255 from 300 to obtain 45.
Compute 45 ÷ 300 = 15 percent.
Check deaths, transfers, definitions, and missing records before attribution.
Response criteria
- Describe the historical context and institutions accurately.
- Connect relevant evidence to an explained conclusion.
- Represent particular perspectives without stereotypes or invented testimony.
- Identify an evidentiary limitation or a distinction that qualifies the claim.
Problem 6
Answer and explanation
Describe escape within coercive conditions and its risks. Agency in resistance is different from the freedom to choose residence or employment; the institutional constraint must remain part of the explanation.
Response criteria
- Describe the historical context and institutions accurately.

- Represent particular perspectives without stereotypes or invented testimony.
- Identify an evidentiary limitation or a distinction that qualifies the claim.
