Chapter: Trade Networks, Empires & Disruption

What these drills covers

By the end of Korea & Southeast Asia: States, Water & Cultural Choice you should be able to:

4 questions, written answer, each with a worked explanation.

Vocabulary used: context, evidence, interpretation, reservoir, syncretism.

Problem 1

Why should a water-management state and a port state be compared through different evidence?
Answer and explanation

A resource base creates possibilities rather than one automatic state form. Compare how an institution mobilized labor and income. Monumental water systems and port commerce require different evidence to assess administration and public effects.

Problem 2

Why is reduced use of a capital not the disappearance of its people?
Answer and explanation

Do not infer one sudden disappearance from an abandoned monument. Compare dated occupation, changing settlement centers, environmental evidence, and later communities. A capital’s changing role is different from the end of all Khmer history.

Problem 3

How can imported practices be evidence of local choice?
Answer and explanation

A useful explanation traces who adopted a practice, for what purpose, and how it changed locally. Similar forms are evidence to investigate, not proof of passive imitation. Cultural exchange may involve both cooperation and unequal political relationships.

Problem 4

Why does an official ideological change not prove immediate uniform household change?
Answer and explanation

A dynasty’s official emphasis does not establish that every household abandoned earlier practices. Compare court policy, religious institutions, texts, and local evidence. Period labels should locate change rather than freeze an entire population into one worldview.
