Questions using parallel structure

Problem 1

Which sentence has correct PARALLEL structure?
  1. My hobbies are reading, to paint, and hiking.
  2. My hobbies are reading, painting, and hiking.
  3. My hobbies are to read, painting, and hike.
  4. My hobbies are reader, painting, and hike.
Answer and explanation

My hobbies are reading, painting, and hiking.

All three items match the same grammatical form (gerunds ending in -ing): reading, painting, hiking.

Problem 2

Using an assigned reading or one exercise source, write a developed response applying semicolons, colons & parallel structure. Aim for 180–250 words; name the reading or reproduce the sentence you revise.
Answer and explanation

“The workshop teaches planning, drafting, and revising.” Matching -ing forms show three processes at the same grammatical level. A complete response supplies context, a focused claim, a brief supporting detail, explanation, and a relevant qualification. Do not simply repeat this model.

Use the criteria to compare your reasoning, not to copy the model’s wording. A supported alternative interpretation may earn full credit.

Response criteria

  • Make an accurate, focused claim or revision.
  • Use a relevant detail or a clearly explained language choice.
  • Explain the relationship and recognize a relevant limit.
